Subject: Please Support S. 1302 for Inclusion in an Omnibus
Honorable Members of the Senate Finance Committee,
I am asking for your support to move S. 1302, “Social Security Fairness Act”, (Brown-OH, Collins-MA), forward by including it in an omnibus bill during the lame duck session. As you already know, this bipartisan bill will fully repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) penalties that financially harm millions of retirees across our great nation.
I would like to point out that the WEP penalizes by as much as 50 percent the earned Social Security benefits of foreign pension recipients. Among the 50 States, this is the fourth largest group that is wrongly affected by the WEP. This group consists of legal immigrants who first earned a foreign pension, came to the States, and then earned a Social Security pension. It also consists of American citizens who earned a foreign pension and then earned a Social Security pension.
As a Polish American, I know of many in our community who are unjustly penalized by the WEP. Please also note that there are many legal immigrants of other countries who are similarly denied the benefits they legitimately earned because of the WEP.
Now is the time to repeal the unjust WEP and GPO penalties. I thank each member of the Senate Finance Committee who has cosponsored S. 1302 and ask those who have not to please do so now and move it to the forefront.
