Call to Action for Polonia and others - Action Nr 8

Protect Social Security and Medicare

As members of The National Retirement Security Task Force, we are concerned about proposals to create a special commission to address Social Security’s future. Major changes to Social Security should be considered through the regular legislative process, with full public hearings, transparency, debate, and an opportunity for members of Congress to offer amendments.

A commission process that accelerates congressional consideration or limits amendments could reduce the opportunity for retirees, workers, advocacy organizations, and the public to understand and respond to proposals before Congress acts. We urge Congress to address Social Security’s long-term solvency through an open, bipartisan and transparent legislative process.

Send your letter today. Follow up again on October 13 and 20. Consistent pressure works.

Subject: Protect and Strengthen Social Security and Medicare

Dear Representative _________________,

We urge you to come together across party lines to develop a bipartisan solution to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare. These two vital earned-benefit programs provide essential financial and health security to millions of Americans.

We are also concerned about creating a special commission to determine Social Security’s future. Changes to Social Security should be considered through the regular legislative process, with public hearings, transparency, meaningful debate, and the opportunity for Congress to fully consider and amend proposals.

Please oppose efforts to fast-track major Social Security changes through a special Social Security commission. Instead, we ask Congress to work through the regular legislative process provides the transparency and accountability that changes of this magnitude deserve. It allows proposals to be fully examined in public hearings, gives elected representatives the opportunity to debate and amend them, and ensures that retirees, workers, and the American public have a voice before decisions affecting their earned benefits are made.

Thank you,
